'The Walking Dead' Season 6 air date, cast & spoilers: showrunner addresses racism issue; first episode's title revealed?
"The Walking Dead" showrunner Scott Gimple talked about the issue of killing of black characters in the show in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
"You know, I was aware of who was going to die last year. Even before last year for some of those characters. And at the beginning of the year, some of those characters weren't cast. It was always about casting the best person. It's very difficult," said Gimple.
He went on to say that TV adaptations of the comic book characters were not always specific or were always black.
"Bob wasn't a black character in the comics, but I wouldn't wanna miss out on Lawrence Gillard," Gimple explained. "And Noah, when we were casting him, Tyler was the best actor. I loved what he did and what he brought to the show. All sorts of people came in, from all sorts of different backgrounds and ethnicities. It's tough because I also want to be sensitive to how people feel."
Gimple explained that two of those characters were to die and that he admitted to casting the best actors to play the role. He explained that Lawrence's and Tyler's auditions were amazing that he couldn't help but cast them into the roles regardless of race.
"In this case it really was about the best actor for the gig. I would've loved people to have seen Lawrence's auditions—which were totally fake sides—and he was amazing. Tyler's audition was amazing.
"It's a very, very difficult issue, and I honor anybody who felt hurt. It's very tricky. I would've hated to have not seen those actors on the show, because they were fantastic and are part of the family now. It's tough," Gimple added.
According to the report by HNGN.com, which cites popular fan site The Spoiling Dead Fans, the season 6 first episode will be titled "First Time Again."
The article inferred that the premiere title might refer to the meet up of two old friends, Rick and Morgan. Or better yet, it could mean that season 6 will be rife with flashbacks about an event in the past. It is also rumored that some storylines from the original comic book will be incorporated into the upcoming season.
According to ComicBook.com, we will be seeing Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon), Lauren Cohen (Maggie Greene), Danai Gurira (Michonne), Sonequa Martin-Green (Sasha), Andrew Lincoln and (Rick Grimes) to name a few.
The American horror-drama series "The Walking Dead" season 6 will premiere on Oct. 11, Sunday at 9 p.m.
