Every year, an American adult gets infected by the common colds two to three times and if you decided to skip on the flu vaccine, expect that number to increase. But, it doesn’t mean you have to let it keep you down because thankfully, there are many ways to avoid the nasty flu besides getting the shot or washing your hands thoroughly.

It is time to fight back through the use of tried and tested home remedies. Here is a list of the top five survival tips from experts that you can use to combat the fall season's common colds and flu.

1) HAVE YOGURT DURING BREAKFAST

CNN writes that according to Dr. Holly Phillips, a general internist from the state of New York, live cultures are not only beneficial for digestion but they are also known to help curb cold symptoms. One study even backed this up by stating that probiotics can decrease upper respiratory infections by 12 percent.

2) GARGLE WITH WARM, SALTY WATER & WARM HOT LIQUIDS

WebMD reports that gargling can help moisten and ease sore throat, bringing in a temporary relief. This is made even better if salt is added to the water because it lessens the itchiness of the throat.

As for that soothing warm liquid concoction, use honey or apple cider vinegar in warm water to relieve nasal congestion, soothe inflamed membranes in the throat and prevent dehydration.

3) CONSUME CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP

It may sound cliché but US Health News writes that according to William Schaffner from the Department of Preventive Medicine at Vanderbilt Medical School, the soup will help hydrate the body and provide easily digestible nutrients.

4) TRY ON ELDERBERRY EXTRACT

CNN adds that elderberry extract can ease congestion, pains and aches brought about by viral infections. Dr. Jaclyn Chase shares that based on a study, a 15-milliliter dosage of this extract can even cut down flu duration by four days.

5) GET LOTS OF SLEEP AND USE AN EXTRA PILLOW WHILE YOU'RE AT IT

WebMD adds that resting can help your body direct all its energy to battling the flu. As it can be taxing to a sick person, getting enough rest will not only conserve energy but will also help the immune system recuperate.

Using an extra pillow can help clear out nasal passages because your head is elevated. It can drain clogged noses way faster and will even avoid waking you up at night.
