Fans are already counting down to the release of "Suicide Squad," which comes to theaters less than a year from now. With much of the hype surrounding the film's star-studded cast, it's not difficult to see why movie-goers would get excited for the DC Comics anti-hero film that features Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jared Leto and Cara Delevingne, among other names.

Suicide Squad has also garnered buzz thanks to Jared Leto's casting as The Joker. The 30 Seconds to Mars frontman recently addressed the crowd at their concert, opening up about his role, "I can’t wait for you to see this—they’re going to lock me away in a box after this movie comes out."

While this doesn't say much, Leto has been vocal about his excitement to portray the iconic role, with actors such as the late Heath Ledger, Cesar Romero, and Jack Nicholson formerly playing The Joker in various films.

"The opportunity to take on this nearly Shakespearean character—that's what graphic novels and comic books are becoming, right?" Leto told Billboard January. "This beautiful disaster of a character—what a big challenge."

That challenge also came as a physical one, as Leto had to gain weight to play the role. Collider reported that Leto told Billboard, "I’m trying to gain a lot of weight. It means I have to eat every couple of hours—and I’m terrible at eating a lot."

The transformation worked, as co-star Margot Robbie told the NY Daily News, "What he's doing with the character is so cool."

The 25-year-old actress, who plays Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, admitted, "At first it was kind of confronting (to be up close) but now I'm so used to it, I think if I ever saw him out of makeup now I would be really confused."

She added, "Actually, I saw him out of makeup once and I was actually petrified of him. I was too scared to go up and didn't know who that person was, and when he got back into his makeup I was far more comfortable."

The Wolf of Wall Street actress also shed light on her character, saying, "I guess the one common denominator is we're all bad guys, it just makes everything more fun that way. The scenes are more interesting I feel, when you just don't know how the characters are going to react, especially with Harley, who's absolutely nuts...she's either going to kill you or laugh and give you a hug."

Suicide Squad is set to hit theaters on Aug. 5, 2016, and you can check out the latest trailer below.
