'X-Men: Apocalypse' spoilers, news & update: director Bryan Singer talks runtime for final installment

"X-Men: Apocalypse" won't hit theaters until spring next year, but director Bryan Singer is already waxing nostalgic about the film, which brings to conclusion not one but two trilogies of the massive Marvel franchise. Singer made an appearance at the San Pedro International Film Festival, where he spoke about some scenes he hopes would make the final cut, the trailer, and how long the final cut he plans to make, Entertainment Weekly reports.

"I think it’s gonna be a longer X-Men movie," Singer confessed. "The X-Men movies, I usually I keep under two hours, but this one I may actually let be a longer movie because it’s sort of a wrap-up of six movies."

Of course, Singer is referring to X-Men (2000), X-Men 2 (or X2, which came out in 2003), X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: First Class, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. The upcoming film, tagged Apocalypse, will bring back James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast.

Singer spoke about how the trailer and the film will show much of the franchise's history, saying, "There’s even an homage at the end [of the film]. There’s a scene—it’s gonna get spoiled because they decided to use it in the trailer which comes out in, like, six months, but it’s a really cool trailer–but it’s kind of a wrap up of six movies. So, it might run a little bit long, but it’s not boring."

The film will also feature newcomers Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, and Tye Sheridan as the younger versions of Storm, Jean Grey, and Cyclops, respectively. Singer told Empire in April, "They’re as much a part of the movie as our main cast. Scott is not yet the squeaky-clean leader. Storm is a troubled character who is going down the wrong path in life. And Jean is complex, interesting and not fully mature. It’s fun to see someone struggling with their powers when you know one day they’ll become the most powerful person in the world."

During last month's Toronto International Film Festival, screenwriter Simon Kinberg told Collider that X-Men Apocalypse "delivers on the dramatic story and emotion of the last two movies. It feels like the culmination of the four main characters really—McAvoy, Fassbender, Nic Hoult, and Jen. And it’s a bigger movie in both physical scale and I would say emotional stakes too because it is the culmination of this mini trilogy of stories."

X-Men: Apocalypse, which features Oscar Isaac as the titular villain, debuts in theaters on May 27, 2016.
