'Goosebumps' review, news & update: Sony's '90s hit book series tops the chart; beats 'The Martian' by a hair
Sony Picture's "Goosebumps" comes out as the top box office hit this week with $23.5 million, putting space adventure movie "The Martian" in second place with $21.5 million.
The family-friendly film is rated PG-13 and stars Jack Black as author R.L. Stine. "Goosebumps" reportedly took $58 million to produce. According to ABC News, 59 percent of the movie audience who were under 25 gave the movie an "A" rating.
"It's set up so well for not only this weekend, but for the rest of the fall," Sony's president of worldwide distribution, Rory Bruer said, according to the outlet. "The word of mouth is just terrific. I think we were able to convey how much fun the film is for the entire family, no matter what their age."
On the third place is Steven Spielberg's cold-war movie "Bridge of Spies" which made $15.4 million this week. The movie is considered "adult" despite its PG-13 rating. According to CBS, most of its audience was at least 25-years-old. However, according to a senior media analyst, Spielberg's thriller will "have a very long life in theaters" and is off on "a very solid start."
Guillermo Del Toro's gothic horror romance movie, "Crimson Peak" held the fourth spot, making only $12.8 million this week. It stars Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska with a rated R rating. The outlet reported that the movie only had a "B" score and most of its limited audience was adult fans of Del Toro.
"It's not a slasher movie, it's not a PG-13 movie aimed at the date crowd. It's more of a sophisticated movie," said a senior analyst of Del Toro's film as to why it placed fourth.
Meanwhile, "Goosebumps" star Jack Black revealed in an interview that AMC's "The Walking Dead" has now become a "money grab" since pilot creator Frank Darabont was fired from the program in 2011.
""Frank Darabont created a masterpiece and it has kind of got pretty schlocky. But now we cannot help it," Black told USA Today. "The momentum has carried us. We have to know what has happened to our favorite soap opera. It's very 'Days of Lives with Zombies.'"
As for the spin-off "Fear the Walking Dead," the actor comedian had very choice words for it too.
"It's such a lazy title. I've heard it's really good, we might have to watch it. But we'll wait until we're out of things to watch before we get on another Walking Dead show."
