Ricky Gervais returns to host the 2016 Golden Globe Awards
Ricky Gervais is back to hosting the Golden Globe Awards, making his 2016 stint his fourth in 2016. The Office actor hosted the same annual awards event for three straight years, from 2010 to 2012.
Gervais will be replacing the dynamic duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, both of which also hosted the event for three years, says E Online. The hosting contract for the female comediennes ended in 2015.
Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Lorenzo Soria issued the following statement on the HFPA website, "Ricky Gervais left us with a lasting impression, and we are thrilled to have him back in our show as we honor the best in film and television. His off-the-cuff wit and quirky charm will surely have the room and audiences around the world at the edge of their seats."
Robert Greenblatt complimented the male actor on Variety saying, "We're excited to have Ricky Gervais back to host the most enjoyable awards show of the season in his own inimitable way.
"Disarming and surprising, Ricky is ready to honor - and send up - the best work of the year in film and television. Fasten your seats belts," Greenblatt adds.
Entertainment Weekly says that the veteran's controversial statements and way of roasting celebrities are not everybody's choice of tea. In 2012, then-president Philip Berk of the Hollywood Press Association said that Gervais' piercing jokes "definitely crossed the line."
Knowing his style of edgy comedy, the HFPA seems to be ready to take a risk again says Time. For people who have forgotten what Gervais is like on stage, People and Variety listed a few of his memorable jokes from his 2011 and 2012 performances.
On Twitter, the comedian left a message right after the announcement was given saying "Now I want Donald Trump to stop saying things until the day before The Golden Globes."
"It's a good job I'm drunk. Otherwise the thought of hosting The Golden Globes again would seem like a real pain in the arse," he goes on to saying.
The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards will be shown live on Jan. 10, 2016 from the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Gervais' jokes and controversial statements are not limited to award ceremonies. According to People, earlier this year, the celebrated comedian joked about how celebrities frequently break the law with little to no repercussions.
There 25 awards up for grabs, 14 for movies and 11 for shows on television. Nominations will be released on Thursday, Dec. 10.
Members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will be selecting the winners for each of the 25 categories, says People magazine.
