'Alice Through the Looking Glass' trailer, cast news & update: watch Alice return to Tim Burton's Wonderland in latest movie clip
Disney has released the first trailer for "Through the Looking Glass," the sequel to their 2010 "Alice in Wonderland." Watch Alice go back home to wonderland to save the Mad Hatter from Time.
In the trailer we see Alice (Mia Wasikowska) return to wonderland, but instead of going through the rabbit hole, she goes through the mirror instead.
"When the day becomes the night, and the sky becomes the sea. When the clock strikes heavy, and there's no time for tea, and in our darkest hour before my final rhyme, she will come back home to wonderland, and turn back the hands of time," a voice belonging to Blue Caterpillar (Alan Rickman) says over the trailer.
We have come to learn that the Hatter (played by Johnny Depp) is in trouble and has made an enemy out of Time (Sacha Baron Cohen), or rather a personification of it. According to Time Magazine, the movie is based off on the 1871 book, "Through The Looking Glass" by Lewis Carrol.
According to The Verge, the original cast have come back to reprise their roles once again. Helena Bonham Carter is back as the Red Queen and so is Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. The movie is directed by James Bobin but still retains the colorful visuals started by Tim Burton, who is the producer of the movie.
The sequel was made because the first movie was so successful, according to the movie's producer. Variety reports that the 2010 film made $1 billion worldwide and $334.2 million in the states.
"Because the first movie was so commercially successful, obviously there was this idea that we should make a sequel," said co-producer Suzanne Todd, via Entertainment Weekly. "But we took a really long time trying to figure out what the interesting themes were for us, which was this idea that we all inadvertently waste time. Once it's gone, it's gone forever."
According to Todd, Time has the power to travel through eras and it is a coveted ability. According to the report by EW, everyone wants Time's power, "everyone wants, Alice needs it, but the Red Queen wants most of all."
Cohen who is known for his remarkable improv skills, challenged the rest of the cast because of it, Todd shared.
"I felt like for the rest of the cast, part of the challenge this time was trying to keep up with Sacha," she shared. "It's like if you were someone who barely jogs and had to go out with a marathon runner."
"Alice Through the Looking Glass" will be showing in theaters on May 27, 2016.
