Here's the reason why the last episode of 'The Walking Dead' season 6 didn't come as a surprise [review, spoilers, cast news]
Fans of "The Walking Dead" can finally breathe easy as Glenn's fate has finally been revealed: he lives! After the production toyed with the fans' emotions by removing Steven Yeun's name on the opening credits, the series has finally shed light on what happened after that shocking zombie attack atop a dumpster. Steven Yeun's Glenn was apparently able to get out of that sticky situation alive. While fans were outraged and emotional over what happened, the actor filmed a special message for fans, saying how thankful he was for the overwhelming reactions and support.
"I’ve been following everything you’ve been saying and it’s meant so much to me to see all of your support and concern for Glenn," Yeun said, according to Entertainment Weekly. "The Walking Dead has the best fans in the world and I’m happy to be back."
The 31-year-old actor also visited "Talking Dead," where he shared that he felt "relieved" and "grateful" now that everyone can stop holding their breath in anticipation for the outcome of his character, who is a dad-to-be.
"I feel so amazed at the response. I feel bad that I couldn’t say anything to everyone and family and friends," Yeun admitted. "I’m pretty sure I’ve lost friendships along the way. But yeah, it’s kind of been overwhelming. I didn’t even really know how to take it all."
Some critics have shown disdain over Glenn's seemingly easy escape from the dire situation, with New York Post calling it a "cop-out". Executive producer, Scott M. Gimple, however, felt that it was important to leave audiences in the gray when it came to Glenn's fate.
E! News reports that during Gimple's visit to "Talking Dead", he brought up playing the suspense card, saying that "I think it was important to do a story this year about uncertainty and that the audience would share that uncertainty that the characters had like in episode five."
"Maggie didn't know what happened to Glenn, and I wanted the audience to be exactly where she was, to feel the exact same way," Gimple explained.
Glenn's character does have a lot more to deal with now that he's back, with the arrival of Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan (which is supposedly happening towards the end of the season) and Maggie's pregnancy.
Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie on the cult favorite, recently told The Hollywood Reporter, "This couple has never been adverse to the idea of having a baby. There is an element of letting the world decide, letting God decide if they should."
"But for me, looking at this without trying to color anyone's perspective— I want people to take it as they want to—there's always the responsibility to create life because of death rather than a responsibility to be cautious because of death," the actress explained.
"The Walking Dead" airs every Sunday at 9 p.m. on AMC.
