'Jane the Virgin' season 2 cast, news & recap: Latino narrator Anthony Mendez talks success & his unique role
One of the more amusing facets of the critically acclaimed CW hit TV series "Jane the Virgin" is the presence of the cheery narrator, who never fails to open the show with a quick recap, and throughout each episode, throws in notes and commentaries on the eventful lives of the Villanuevas and Solanos.
The man behind the voice is Anthony Mendez, who recently spoke to NBC News to talk about the massive success of the show and how it led to his Emmy nomination for Outstanding Narrator in this year's awarding ceremony.
"We woke up that morning knowing that they were gonna stream the announcements, but we also knew that we weren't gonna be part of the mainstream category," Mendez recalled. "Let's face it, most people don't care about a voice over. Most of the public, anyway. Until they do."
Mendez said that following the stream, they waited for the rest of the nominations to go online, and that's when he got a life-changing Tweet. He said, "So I'm sitting there refreshing the page, my wife is nervous. All of a sudden, I get a Twitter notification from CBS [Studios] International that says 'Congratulations...Emmy nomination for Outstanding Narrator, Anthony Mendez' and when I saw that, when my wife saw that, she just went through the roof."
"We started just screaming. It took me a while to catch up, is this really happening? And then all of a sudden I started joining her," he shared. "It was an amazing morning."
Mendez also spoke to Variety back in June, sharing that he was at first reluctant to get on board the "Latin Lover Narrator" part.
"I almost didn’t want to do it," Mendez admitted. "I mean you look at the premise — accidentally artificially inseminated — and then you have a Spanish accent on top of that … As a voice actor of color, you’re always a little bit weary of something like that. What I liked about “Jane” was they weren’t making fun of the accent, it’s just an enhancement to [the show]."
Since the show gained traction and legions of fans, so did he, as he became the invisible co-binge watcher beside the viewer who acted as a guide and at the same time, as an audience member. It was like he could relate to the audiences' reactions to the eventful episodes.
But when it comes to the "Latin Lover Narrator's" character's back story, he says, "I do, but obviously I keep that close to the chest. Jennie [Snyder Urman, the show’s creator] said she was going to reveal it — hopefully not anytime soon because that means the show is coming to an end."
"Jane the Virgin" returns for its midseason finale on Dec. 14 on The CW at 9/8c.
