After speculation that Bruno Mars would return to the Superbowl Halftime Show this 2016, the Wall Street Journal reports that the slot has been given to British rock band Coldplay. The band took to Instagram and Twitter to announce the news, while CNN reports that Coldplay front man Chris Martin shot a video for the event sponsor, Pepsi announcing the news.

"We are so excited and honored and thrilled to be playing the halftime show," Martin said in the video above. "It's going to be wonderful and hope we see you there."

The Superbowl Halftime Show is very timely for the band, as the 19-year-old band is releasing their seventh studio album "A Head Full of Dreams" today, and the show, which airs in February, will definitely help boost sales for the record.

This year, Katy Perry headlined the show with special guests Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliot. Last year, Bruno Mars headlined together with special guest Red Hot Chili Peppers, and in 2013, Beyonce performed with a special appearance by her Destiny's Child bandmates, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, proving to be one of the most epic performances ever. Other more recent performers were Madonna (2012), The Black Eyed Peas (2011), and The Who (2010).

Here are five more artists we'd like to see conquer the Superbowl Halftime Show in the future:

1. Taylor Swift. The 25-year-old singer/songwriter has been dominating charts since signing on to major record label RCA and producing multi-platinum records, and she has transformed from a young lady to a smart businesswoman outside of being an artist. Swift has repeatedly sold out stadiums, so a Halftime Show would definitely be a piece of cake for her. She has also been bringing out a slew of celebrity friends during her concerts, a habit that started during her Red tour and has become a staple in the 1989 World Tour, so it would not be difficult to imagine Swift alongside guest artists on the Superbowl stage.

2. Nicki Minaj. The 32-year-old singer/wrapper has graced the Superbowl Halftime Show stage in 2012 as Madonna's special guest, but the Trinidad and Tobago-born and raised artists deserves her main show, as she is, in fact, a multi-award winning, certified platinum record artist with a number of hits to fill a 15 to 20 minute performance.

3. Rihanna. If the Superbowl is looking to diversify the talents they put on their halftime shows, they should definitely get Rihanna to perform. The 27-year-old Grammy Award-winning performer has seven records to her name, with an upcoming record that will most likely match the success of her previous releases.

4. Demi Lovato. The halftime show has always placed classic acts (U2, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Gloria Estefan, Stevie Wonder, etc), but if they're looking for fresh talent, look no further than former Disney talent Lovato, whose vocal chops has been proven time and again. She has five records worth of material to her name now, and it would be great to see her perform wit guest artists such as Pharell Williams, Wiz Kalifa, The Weeknd, and the like.

5. Maroon 5. Adam Levine has been everywhere but the Superbowl Halftime Show and we believe it's about time that The Voice coach and his award-winning, chart-topping band should be given a chance to shine in the arena. They have five records to their name, and would be great to see alongside guest performers such as Big Sean, Drake, or Flo Rida.

Special mention as well to additional artists who would definitely fit right into the Superbowl Halftime Show stage: Eminem, Chris Brown, and Gwen Stefani (who performed with No Doubt as Shania Twain's guest performers in 2003). Best of luck to Coldplay!
