'Creed 2' Trailer & Cast: Sylvester Stallone Teases Return of Carl Weathers
Audiences were taken aback when "Creed" opened to favorable reviews last year, grossing $103 million at the US box office alone, Variety reports. If that's any indication, a sequel would probably fare favorably, especially if Sylvester Stallone comes back to reprise his role as Robert "Rocky" Balboa.
In fact, the 69-year-old actor recently spoke to Variety to share some ideas on where a sequel may take the "Creed" characters, and who they might bring back, including the original Apollo himself, actor Carl Weathers.
"Ryan [Coogler] has some ideas of going forward and backward and actually seeing Rocky and Apollo together," Stallone said, as per Collider. "Think of The Godfather 2. That’s what he was thinking of, which was kind of ambitious."
Ryan Coogler, who directed "Creed", also discussed ideas with Stallone, as the actor shared, "You’ll have him face a different opponent, which I would say is a more ferocious, big Russian. You can start to meld my experiences and then you start to bring different cultures into it. And you can see what’s happening with the Russians today in America. The complication will come with the girl’s ambition because she’s not Adrian. She has places to go, things to see, the clock is running on her hearing."
Where the sequel may take Jordan's Adonis "Donnie" Creed and Stallone's Rocky is yet unknown at this point, but one thing is for sure, the sequel is indeed happening, as according to Philly, MGM CEO Gary Barber confirmed, "There's no doubt that we're making a 'Creed 2'."
Stallone recently opened up to Deadline to talk about his career and "Creed". The actor had nothing but praises for Jordan, "who has extraordinary athletic ability...He was able to morph his athleticism into boxing, which is a very, very, very slow process. He put in the time. I can’t tell you the pounding he took because he was in there with professionals as opposed to other actors. And he wouldn’t give up."
"He got that swagger and moves that fighters get. It is a calm athleticism, but you know in a second, it can turn into a graceful ballet of violence," Stallone mused.
The veteran action star who has appeared in numerous films over the course of his 40-year career also talked about what he wanted to do next.
"I’d like to just explore something different, and work with other young directors like Ryan," Stallone said. "I look at Clint Eastwood, who has really set the bar very high, and has set a great example of how you can act and direct and do quality work into the latter part of life. That is something that I will strive for."
