'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Release Date & Trailer: James Gunn Planned a David Bowie Cameo for 'GOTG' Sequel [Report]
David Bowie, considered to be one of the most iconic personas of pop culture, has died from cancer, and one of those who were openly sad at his death is none other than “Guardians of The Galaxy” director James Gunn.
Gunn said that they were already in talks, considering having Bowie do a cameo appearance for the upcoming “Guardians of The Galaxy 2,” the sequel to the hilarious Marvel movie, The Hollywood Reporter shared.
"Just a very short while ago [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige and I were talking about a cameo role in Guardians Vol. 2, and he brought up Bowie's name," Gunn wrote on Facebook.
"I told him nothing in the world would make me happier, but I heard from common friends he wasn't doing well,” Gunn explained. “We heard back that he was okay and it could potentially happen. Who knows what that was about? But, for whatever reason, it made [the news] more of a surprise."
Bowie reportedly died of cancer, which he was battling for about 18 months, BBC reported. According to a statement released in his social media accounts, he died peacefully at age 69, surrounded by his family.
Gunn is apparently sad that the planned cameo will not happen. He said that Bowie is one of his huge “idols,” saying that he's deeply connected with the British musician's music on a personal level.
"[Bowie's music] was the music that was playing the night I hit bottom on alcohol and drugs as a very young person," he said, explaining that Bowie's music got embedded in his system.
Gunn still wants to give “GOTG2” a Bowie-touch just like he did with the first. He said that one of Bowie's songs, “Moonage Daydream,” has been featured in “GOTG” and he plans to add another.
“I've been trying to work another song from [the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars] into the sequel, which would make Bowie the only artist to have a song on both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2,” he said. “I thought this was fair and appropriate. Although I cut the scene it was used in from the script, we have the rights"
"Who knows. Maybe I can figure a way out," he added.
