Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella are officially on board as part of the reboot of "The Mummy" franchise.

A few months ago, rumors of Cruise and Boutella joining the film have surfaced, but it is only until now that the two have been officially confirmed to be cast. According to IGN, Cruise will play the starring role while his co-star will be the feminized version of the Mummy.

There have been versions of the franchise in the past. According to Bustle, the original film first went onscreen in 1932 which starred Boris Karloff in the titular role. Come 2008, another movie series was launched again with Brendan Fraser in the lead. Not much is known about the new reboot but there are a lot of questions surrounding it.

The remake will reportedly be directed by Alex Kurtzman, known for his script work for "Transformers" and "The Amazing Spiderman 2," Entertainment Weekly reports. He will also produce it alongside Chris Morgan ("Furious 7" and Sean Daniel. "The Mummy" is set to be released on June 9, 2017.

It seems Universal Pictures is joining the bandwagon of "shared universes" and according to Inside the Magic, the studio is looking at the film to start their Monster Universe. Taking a page from Marvel's superhero universe where heroes interact with others on different films, Universal's classic monsters will be able to interact with one another across their movies.

In an interview with Variety, Kurtzman and Moran shared their thoughts about the studio's plans and how they're working on it.

"We're creating a mythology, so we're looking at this canon and thinking, 'What are the rules?' " Kurtzman said. "What can we break and what are the ones that are untouchable?"

The outlet states that numerous artists are coming up with designs for the monsters and writers have been assigned to manage a specific monster.

"The idea is that we have a deep bench of brains to consult with about how their monster fits into our world as we go forward," he explained.

The two thinks that moviegoers will be interested in what they have in store for them.

"Heroes tend to be perfect, but most people in an audience aren't ever going to know what it's like to be the smartest, strongest or fastest person alive," said Morgan. "But there's a darkness inside everybody. And everyone wants to be able to turn a curse into empowerment. The monsters have been in the shadows, and now it's time to bring them out into the light."
