'Suicide Squad' Trailer & Release Date: Jared Leto’s Joker Will Take You 'On a Journey', Says Director
The deadly criminals of "Suicide Squad" won't haunt viewers' dreams until the film gets released in August, but fans and moviegoers alike are already getting a taste of what's to come, with the new trailer (perfectly set to the tune of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody") released last week.
The trailer features each of the Squad members in their prison cells and their first foray back into the outside world. The Joker, famously played by Jared Leto, says menacingly, "I can't wait to show you my toys." Fans can't wait to see them, either.
Speaking of Leto, his method-acting approach to the character has in fact made an impact among cast members and his co-stars. His transformation from blue-eyed darling into a skinny, green-haired venomous villain has gotten fans and viewers all riled up for the film.
Director David Ayer has nothing but praises for the 44-year-old actor/singer/songwriter. So is Leto's Joker effective enough to creep out even Ayer?
"Big time. The hairs stand up on the back of your neck," Ayer admitted to USA Today. Meanwhile, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" director Zack Snyder also commends Leto for his work.
"The commitment to the role, you’re going to see that really shine through in a way that you’re not used to seeing actors in movies really go all the way with [in] every little moment and every little breath," Snyder explained, as per Entertainment Weekly. "You’re going to get taken on a journey with Jared that I don’t know that everyone’s ready for but I think it will be amazing."
Meanwhile, Ayer's last major endeavor was 2014's "Fury," in which he worked with actors Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, and Logan Lerman. He also wrote and directed 2014's "Sabotage" starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, and Terrence Howard, and the 2012 crime drama "End of Watch," which starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña, Anna Kendrick, and America Ferrera. Needless to say, he has worked with talented actors, but Leto may be one of those who stand out.
"It’s a scary character to tackle," Ayer said of Leto's Joker. "This iteration of him, people will realize there really is a continuity of history—there is a lot of respect for what the Joker represents, who he is as a character. He is the best-known villain in fiction, so there’s an incredible responsibility there to also be faithful to what he is but at the same time push him into this next world, next time, next phase."
Whether or not that next phase would involve The Joker teaming up with the Suicide Squad, or as Ayer prefers to say, "#Skwad," fans will have to wait and see. Ayer released a new image of the film via Twitter before the trailer was released, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and fans can feast on both the trailer and image below.
