The "World's Most Obese Man" Andres Moreno made headlines in December when he passed away from a heart attack at 39 years old. According to Daily Mail, Moreno, who hailed from Sonora, Mexico, was 980 pounds at his heaviest and had just undergone a weight loss surgery after losing 266 pounds naturally.

Moreno passed away just a month after football athlete Cristiano Ronaldo sent him a signed Real Madrid shirt as a message of support for Moreno's continued weight loss.

"I want to thank everyone, especially Ronaldo, for taking interest in my case. Sometimes you think that people live in another world way from the people, but that is not the case," Moreno said at the time. "I feel as if I had gotten a Christmas gift before Christmas."

Moreno had undergone a surgery to remove about 70% of his stomach and decrease his small intestine at the Mexico Gastric Bypas unit at Arboledas Hospital in October. After the successful surgery, he said that he could finally stand up by himself and walk.

"'I realized I was putting on more and more weight and getting bigger but it was like a snowball I couldn’t stop. Friends and family would visit me and when they went I was left alone crying and sad because of my situation and begging God to put me back on the right path," Moreno said.

However, Moreno's death was not directly caused by his obesity. FOX News Latino reports that according to Dr. Jorge Ojeda, the head of the intensive care unit at the Mexican American Hospital of Guadalajara, who treated Moreno several times, his patient had consumed a large amount of an energy drink three days before he passed on Christmas Day.

Ojeda said that according to Moreno's family members, his patient had consumed six or more cans of energy drinks per day. The doctor said that these drinks can cause "tachycardia and serious arrhythmias." Tachycardia is defined by the Mayo Clinic as faster than normal heart rate while at rest, while arrythmias refer to the abnormal or irregular heart rhythm.

Moreno reportedly died of a heart attack and complications linked to peritonitis, which is defined by WebMD as the inflammation of the abdomen's lining. He also had a prehistory of diabetes and heart problems. He passed away at the age of 38 in Ciudad Obregon in Sonora.

Mexico has long been recognized as the most obese country in the Americas, CBS News reports. Health authorities are concerned, as malnourishment and obesity are hitting the population hard, especially those who live in poverty, and the young. As much as 70% of Mexican adults are overweight, and childhood obesity has tripled in the last 10 years.
