'Moto X' 2016 Specs, Review & Release Date: Lenovo's Motorola Phase Out NOT Putting Fourth Gen Smartphone at Risk, 2016 Moto Line Will be Premium Devices [Rumors]
Motorola's phase out will not have a huge impact on Lenovo's smartphone inventory. The company, which acquired the brand in 2014, will instead be releasing a premium Moto Line for 2016.
Engadget reported that Lenovo has finally made profits in the sale of its mobile devices under the Motorola branding. The demand for said cellphones have increased to 25 percent in the last quarter. However, despite this, the company is pushing plans of rebranding Motorola to Lenovo Moto soon.
Know Your Mobile reported in January that Lenovo planned on ditching the Motorola name despite earlier pronouncements it will be protecting the brand. However, this phase out will only affect old and lower end devices; however, its high end smartphones will still be part of the company's inventory for its mobile products.
In fact, Lenovo will be releasing a new line of Moto X phones for 2016 with three models and a special edition model, Pocket Lint reported. The phones are expected to be out by July or August, but Motorola don't usually follow a strict timeline of releases as Apple or Samsung. Hence, the release dates could still change.
It's been speculated that the designs of the Moto X phones will come with a full metal unibody that will set it apart from Apple and Samsung phones, Pocket Lint further cited. This was based on a leaked image that was first posted on a Chinese website Wapvnet.
First Post cited that the metal unibody is just but one of the designs though. There's also a phone that will come with shatter proof glass, which the tech company has been developing since 2013.
As for screen display, it might follow similar specs as previous Moto X models, with one design carrying a 5.4 inch screen and a Quad HD resolution and another design with a 5.5 inch screen with Full HD display. A third design will be largest with 5.7 inch screen and a Quad HD resolution. Tech experts assume Moto X 2016 screens will not be smaller than 5 inches.
As for features, the device's rear camera will be larger and more obvious, -- suggesting that, this time, Lenovo will be using a different sensor. Based on the leaked image, the camera will also appear to be slightly raised, similar to iPhone 6s. It is expected that all Moto X models will feature 21-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera.
Moto X phones is expected to also come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset and heat pipe for its CPU. Other specs include 2GB and 3GB RAM, 32GB and 64GB storage with microSD support. Moto X will run on Android Marshmallow.
