The Snow Queen is coming to the Broadway in spring 2018, reports New York Times. On Tuesday, Disney announced that it plans to bring a staged musical adaptation of "Frozen."
The international hit Disney film "Frozen" will come to life in a new theatrical production scheduled to hit Broadway in spring 2018, according to the report. The show is said to be the ninth musical that Disney has brought to Broadway through its New York-based theatrical division. Famous Disney animations that were brought to Broadway include "The Lion King" and "Aladdin."
According to New York Times, the production helped accelerate the recovery of Times Square and the commercial theatre industry.
A tryout is scheduled on summer of 2017. Exact dates and location are to be announced at a later date. During this time, Disney said it would create a developmental production of "Frozen" outside of New York.
The stage production will also unite three members of the film's creative team namely songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, and screenwriter and co-director Jennifer Lee. Robert and Kristen will reportedly create additional songs for the stage incarnations while Lee will write the musical's book.
According to Seattle Times, several highly-praised theatre personalities will steer the project to the stage. Alex Timbers, a two-time Tony Award nominee who directed "Peter and the Starcatcher", "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson", "The Pee-Wee Herman Show", and "Rocky", will helm the show. He is also the co-creator and co-writer of the musically-themed Amazon series "Mozart in the Jungle."
Peter Daring, who won a Tony Award for "Billy Elliot" and was nominated for his work on "Matilda the Musical," will choreograph the theatre production. Sets and costume designs will be created by seven-time Tony winner Bob Crowley. Crowley won an award for the Disney shows "Aida" and "Mary Poppins," according to New York Times.
Lights execution will be designed by five-time Tony winner Natasha Katz while sound design will be handled by four-time Tony nominee Peter Hylenski. Music supervision will be managed by two-time Tony winner Stephen Oremus. He will be creating vocal and incidental arrangements.
The animated film was released in 2013 featuring the voices of Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell. "Frozen" has earned Disney more than $1.27 billion at the box office worldwide. This has become the most successful animated movie of all time. Even its musical score, "Let It Go" has won an Oscar.
According to Apple, Frozen's soundtrack was the year's top-selling album on iTunes in 2014. "Frozen" merchandise has been a huge income generator since the film has been released.
