President of Sony Worldwide, Shuhei Yoshida, has finally confirmed that Playstation 5 will be pursued while President of Microsoft Xbox also confirmed that Xbox Two is also set to happen. However, experts in the industry believe that this could be the last consoles for PlayStation and Xbox.

Given the rate technology advances, it is reasonable to assume that PS4 and Xbox One might be the last gaming consoles. Now that mobile phones are turning into gaming consoles and with virtual reality technology gaining popularity, there's a high possibility that hardware like PS5 and Xbox One might be in danger, reports Crossmap.

According to Emmet Shear, the executive at Twitch-a-streaming service, the most reasonable decision for both companies is to create set-top boxes.

In order to extend the lifespan of the consoles, they need to have a number of other uses, said Emmet. This idea was also supported by Geoffrey Zatkin, chief product officer at EEDA.

Reports from Lawyer Herald reveal that PS5 and Xbox Two may arrive as virtual reality devices with 4K display resolution. Given the fame virtual reality is getting, Sony and Microsoft may just equip their next consoles with VR support.

More so, the news site also reports on rumours that Sony might be pushing for a disc-less gaming platform as streaming becomes the trend nowadays. This means that PS5 can be used for downloading and streaming game titles. Rumors have it that PS5 may also sport a sleeker build that could compete with Apple's iPad's portability.

AMD is also reportedly working on a new type of processor that will greatly improve performance by five times more than the current consoles, the new site added.

Meanwhile, Crossmap reports that Microsoft and Sony's next-generation game consoles may be available in the market as early as 2019. According to the report, Xbox Two may be released alongside PS5 on 2019.

According to Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, one of the consoles may arrive in 2019 with the possibility that release dates will be staggered in the next console generation, reports Value Walk. This has previously happened on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 generation released dates.

Microsoft reportedly had the edge over Sony simply by releasing its console well ahead of the Playstation 3. However, Pachter believes that the existing PS4 and Xbox One will be replaced before the end of this decade.

If predictions prove correct, PS4 and Xbox One would have a lifespan of approximately seven years. Once the next generation machines are released, the predecessors will last another three years. This will essentially give the PS4 and Xbox One an overall ten-year life cycle. This is much in line with the previous consoles released in the industry. This also supports the 2018 release date.
