"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" hit the theaters worldwide on December 16, 2016, with huge expectations. And as expected, it proved to be a smash hit and was received well by all countries.

The end is similar to the Star Wars: A New Hope, leaving everyone dead. But, that's not what the original script supposed to be. According to the Rouge One director, Gareth Edwards, he originally wrote a happy ending for the movie when the heroes of the movie survive the battle of Scarif.

As per The Verge, Edwards in an interview with Empire in early December revealed that the Rouge One ending was a "cutting-room casualty". Edwards says that the cast after reading the plot felt that how on earth Jyn (played by Felicity Jones)and friends will survive?

"Everyone read that and there was this feeling of like, 'They've got to die, right?' And everyone was like, 'Yeah, can we?'" However, the Edwards thought otherwise and suggested happy ending for the movie.

Disney studios stubbornly gave the license to kill everyone. Edwards confirmed to Empire that "We thought we weren't going to be allowed to but Kathy [Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm] and everyone at Disney were like 'Yeah it makes sense. I guess they have to because they're not in A New Hope,'".

The director at least hoped for one scene towards the end showing Jyn and Cassian that they are safe on another planet. But, that green signal never came and he has to kill everyone in the end.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the scenes which were there in the original trailer released in April 2016 were never there in the final movie. "There was a bit of a process to refining the third act in terms of specific shots and moments, and certain things just fell away," he explained.

Although the movie did well at the box office, it left an unfulfilled dream for the family-friendly director Edwards, who always hoped for a happy ending.
