7 Foods That Keep You Awake at Night
Studies have revealed that there are some foods, if eaten at dinner, can cause lack of sleep which is better known as insomnia. Researchers are suggesting to avoid these foods at dinner to get a better night's sleep.
According to Progressive Health, the seven foods that should be avoided at dinner are the following:
1. Caffeine: It is a psychoactive stimulant that keeps the central nervous system of humans stays awake by stimulating the release of some excitatory neurotransmitters. Thus experts say to avoid the intake of caffeine close to bedtime.
2. Chocolate: It contains caffeine and so it affects the nervous system by keeping a person awake at night, hence disturbing the sleep. So it is always better to avoid chocolate before going to bed to have a good sleep.
3. Simple Sugars and Sweeteners: All types of sugary intake increases the glucose levels of the body which in turn gives energy to the body causing restlessness. The brain consumes a lot of glucose and therefore can enhance the energy of the body and power increased brain activity. So it is suggested to avoid high sugar intake when one is about to sleep.
4. Fats: Foods containing high fats take a longer time to digest and when the body is continuing the process of digestion it cannot rest and so sleeping is hindered. Consuming fatty food at night is bound to disturb the night's sleep.
5. High Protein Foods: The protein rich foods release amino acids into the blood which is used to quickly synthesize stimulant such as epinephrine and norepinephrine which are excitatory neurotransmitters keeps the brain active and increase the metabolism of the body hindering the sleep, reported Sleep Disorders Place.
6. Spicy Foods: Foods that are spicy are very harsh in the gastrointestinal tract, and any gastrointestinal discomfort will lead to insomnia.
7. Alcohol: It directly affects the central nervous system which makes one feel dizzy but also causes restlessness in the middle of the night disturbing the sleep.
