'Fifty Shades Darker' Hits International Box Office Amid Poor Reviews
"Fifty Shades Darker" is perhaps one of the most controversial movies this year. Although it has gathered several fans worldwide, it seems like its critics were neither impressed nor aroused. In fact, its prequel "Fifty Shades of Grey" in 2015 already received mixed feedbacks about its erotic scenes, however, this one is tagged as a "distinctively unsexy affair" as it is considered as a steamier one.
In 2015, Rolling Stone had already given a generous rate of one-star to "Fifty Shades of Grey", however, with the following film adaptation of EL James's bestselling novels, "Fifty Shades Darker" did not only receive 0.5 stars but a suggested title of "Fifty Shades Dumber."
"What an incredibly, indelibly idiotic movie," Peter Travers says. "It's a beast of roaring stupidity that devours everything in its path, including the veteran filmmaker."
Meanwhile, Catherine Shoard of The Guardian has given one-star to her "Fifty Shades Darker" review. She said that the only thing she desires is to see Sam Taylor-Johnson back to directing the movie. She also criticized about how the novel should have fueled the film, which has proven to sold a million copies.
Meanwhile, Robbie Collin of the Telegraph also serves as a critic to the movie "Fifty Shades Darker". However, he was able to provide two-stars to it. The writer has compared it to its prequel, telling that the stars were not able to surpass the previous film.
However, these reviews were almost kind unlike with the one written by the Daily Mirror. The review suggested to those who wants to see a billionaire playboy who likes darkness, favors violence, and who dresses up in masks, they're better off seeing " The Lego Batman Movie" instead.
"Fifty Shades Darker" was released last February 10 and despite several criticisms, the movie has already become an international box office, with over $42.8M gross for only three days.
