Truth about Cranberries being NOT EFFECTIVE on Urinary Tract Infections Exposed
Many people of various ages already rely on cranberry juice or pills being a supplement in reducing their UTI. But little do they know that cranberries really does NOT do the trick according to some studies.
NY Times reported that a study published in Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) led by Yale School of Medicine infectious disease specialist, Dr. Manisha Juthani-Mehta aimed at proving the effectiveness f cranberry supplements on UTI’s. She then noted that she was hoping that cranberries would work, but it didn’t.
Juthani-Mehta led the study with 185 women were separated into two groups. The other group was given cranberry pills which are equivalent to 20 ounces of cranberry juice. Meanwhile, the other group received downed placebo capsules.
University of Manitoba UTI expert, Dr. Lindsay E. Nicolle also stated in a JAMA editorial that “convincing that cranberry products should not be recommended as a medical intervention for the prevention of UTI.” In which she points out that clinicians shouldn’t state that they have benefits or proven evidence just to promote the use of cranberries.
The study then had the women to take the capsules one year. Thus, the study concluded that there were no significant changes in UTI rates regardless of what the two groups had taken. Yet it was stated as a problem since the group had only an average of 86 year old senior participants. So, it couldn’t be applied to the whole population per Guardian LV.
More so, the publication also reported that another study by University of Michigan School of Public Health published on Clinical Infectious Diseases led to the same result. Yet amid researches, there are still studies that lead to the opposite result of cranberry products being effective.
With that, enough said, while some doctors advise people not to take cranberry products, no harmful effect of drinking cranberry juice had been found. So with just the need to flush out the system by keeping the body hydrated as the top recommended method for UTI, it was stated that it is safe that people could still take cranberry juice.
