The Shocking Science Behind Mysterious Moving Ouija Boards, (You Actually Move It, Not Spirits)
Many people are drawn into superstitious beliefs. One of those is meeting spirits through the use of an Ouija board. Yet reports and studies had found out that there is science behind the usage of the spirit calling board.
According to Inverse the usual who moved the board isn’t really ought to be some spirits. But the persons around the talking board were identified to be responsible for the movement. It was then cleared up by British physician and psychologist, William Benjamin Carpenter that the Ouija board’s movements revolve around the so-called ideomotor effect in 1800.
Ideomotor effect is then explained to be nonconscious muscular movement. In which Dr. Chris French, a professor of psychology at the University of London stated that the Ouija board’s movement seem to be moved by outside force, but it is not. The movement was then identified to be caused by a person’s slightest muscular movement.
The Ouija board’s light weight planchette is said to make the phenomenon possible. Making even small movements profound. “The thing about all these mechanisms we’re talking about, dowsing rods, Ouija boards, pendulums … they’re all devices whereby quite a small muscular movement can cause quite a large effect” French added.
Furthermore, Daily Dot also noted that a 2012 experiment points out to a person’s non-conscious thoughts as a reason for the Ouija board movement. Done by the University of British Columbia, the study then resulted that people that believe that they aren’t controlling the board likely has a higher percentage to answer fact-based questions correctly.
The study which conducted two separate experiments had the first one to just let participants simply answer to yes or no questions. Meanwhile, the other group had to move the planchette in the yes or no. It was found out that people who just guessed their answer were 15 percent more accurate when using the board. The results also stated that people might really have an “inner zombie” which is a non-conscious system that moves without thought.
Yet, there would be always people who would continue playing the Ouija board. Rest assured, whether people would still play it is up to them. For more interesting study like back pain as a sign of early death risk without treatment, visit us here.
