'Batkid Begins’ Trailer & Release Date: Miles Scott Beats Cancer & Saves Gotham City
A documentary film about Miles Scott, also known as Batkid, will be released in select theaters, entitled "Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around the World."
Miles Scott was diagnosed with leukemia when he was young and turned to his favorite superheroes for strength, reports Hollywood Life. In 2013, the young superhero-to-be told the Make-A-Wish foundation that he wanted to be Batman for a day.
The foundation was a bit perplexed as to how they could make this young boy's dream come true, but pulled through in the end. According to Screen Rant, on Nov. 15, 2013, the foundation made Scott's wish come true by turning San Francisco into "Gotham City."
At the time, Scott's leukemia was in remission. As Batkid, he was given a costume based on Christopher Nolan's "Batman" trilogy, even though Scott's favorite version of Batman was the one portrayed by Adam West in the 1966 series.
As Batkid patrolled around Gotham, the young superhero "fought" Batman's enemies, the Riddler and Penguin. He even came to the aid of a "damsel in distress."
While he "saved Gotham,"Scott was cheered on by thousands of people. The Make-A-Wish foundation originally planned on including only 200 people to make Scott's dream come true. However, thousands of people came to participate and support Scott as the cape crusader.
Batkid's adventure through Gotham trended on all media platforms, getting support from all the actors who have ever played Batman, other celebrities and even President Barack Obama.
Dana Nachman filmed Batkid's patrol around Gotham and it will be released as a documentary film on June 26, 2015. Below is the official synopsis of "Batkid Begins":
On one day, in one city, the world comes together to grant one 5-year-old cancer patient his wish.
The documentary "Batkid Begins" looks at the "why" of this flash phenomenon. Why did the intense outpouring of spontaneous support for a child reverberate around the world and become one of the biggest "good news stories" ever?
The film explores what happens when an event goes unintentionally viral, and reveals surprising truths about what happens when a nerve is touched in our digital society. Will Make-A-Wish fulfill its mission to help Miles reclaim his childhood after battling disease for more than half his short life?
In the end, the film leaves audiences to decide; did Miles need the world for inspiration? Or did the world need Miles?
CBC News has learned that Julia Roberts will produce and star in a feature film adaptation of the documentary.
