Newborn Baby Dropped by Veteran Nurse, Gets a Fractured Skull

What would you do if your newborn baby falls to the floor while being carried by a veteran medical professional? This is probably the question going through the mind of Jacqueline Hunt.

NY Daily News reports that Eli, Hunt's newborn baby, was accidentally dropped by a 30-year-old veteran nurse at the Uniontown Hospital in Pennsylvania at around 6 a.m. last Tuesday.

Jacqueline has said in an interview with WPXI-TV that she was not aware that her baby was hurt and currently in a neck brace until an hour after the accident occurred. She said that a pediatrician has told her of the situation, stating that the nurse was feeding the baby when she suddenly felt sleepy, dropping little Eli.

International Business Times adds that after Uniontown Hospital conducted several tests for injuries, Eli was airlifted to the Children's Hospital at Pittsburgh of UPMC. One of the attendants has found out that Eli has suffered from a fractured skull with some bleeding on its right side. Eli's mother has added that she was heartbroken by the incident, stating that the nurse should have assessed herself first before picking up her baby.

The hospital said in a statement that they are truly sorry that the unfortunate situation has occurred and that they will do their best to assure the public that such incidents will never happen again in the future.

Josh Krysak has confirmed that Eli is expected to recuperate and that the neck brace has already been removed, says an AP report. The nurse continues to work at the hospital as they recognize her dedication and fully support that the incident is not intentional.

A spokesman has insisted that they cannot verify if the mother's account on the WPXI-TV is accurate as they don't have all the details yet, like the nurse's shift or for how long she has been on duty when the incident occurred. He clarifies that the hospital will do its best to implement changes, so no similar accidents will happen again if the main reason was fatigue.

Krysak confirms that the police are already investigating the incident and that an internal review will be conducted by the hospital. Once the results of the review are released, the hospital has promised to review its protocols and processes.
