Melissa McCarthy Launches New Clothing Line That Includes Plus Sizes
Melissa McCarthy is officially a multihyphenate, with the actress launching her new clothing line, which will be available in HSN on Aug.13, and her webite melissamccarthy.com, Macy's, Lord & Taylor, Lane Bryant, and other retailers come Sept. 1, Mashable reports.
The Spy actress, who was honored with her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in May, is also set to appear alongside Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones in the highly anticipated reboot of "Ghostbusters."
The actress spoke with People about her Melissa McCarthy Seven7 clothing line, describing it as "a selfish venture."
"I wanted to build a better closet for myself," she said
She also raised one of the more important questions in today's world of fashion: "Where are the normal clothes?" Her empowering line, which features clothing for women sizes 4 to 28, also include stylish pieces with sleeves.
"Yes, there are lots of sleeves here!" she told People. "Do you know how many fights I’ve had about sleeves? I was actually told once [by a manufacturer she’s not working with now], ‘Plus-size women do not want sleeves, in any capacity.’ I was like, ‘Are you crazy? That’s not accurate! I am plus-size, and I want them, I have friends who are size 26 and size 8 and they want a sleeve! My stuff has sleeves, my stuff has pockets, you can count on that."
McCarthy also talked to Vogue about how today's fashion had limited her self-expression due to the lack of available pieces that she liked enough to wear.
“Some days I want to be prim and proper, and others I want to be in a band,” added McCarthy. “I lost the ability to do that with clothes. The fun of it is you should be able to put these things together and not have to make a choice about going out to dinner or getting the sweater. Wear the sweater to dinner."
McCarthy, who admitted that her first love was really fashion, also explained: "It’s always what I thought I would do. I went into clothing and textiles in college and moved here with [shoe designer] Brian Atwood. I was going to finish at FIT and he made me do stand-up on the second night."
It seems that she was able to successfully pursue both of her passions, as some pieces of her clothing line had made it into the red carpet for the Spy movie promotions.
McCarthy added that when it comes to red carpet and public appearances, she remembers "being put into things and hearing people say, ‘This is great.’"
"But it was just forcing your body into something—I have to feel good to be confident and to be myself," she said.
"I like when it’s someone’s own style,” the 44-year old actress said. “Anytime something has a personal feel to it, it’s authentic, and I find it inspiring."
