'Game of Thrones' 6 cast news & spoilers: Emilia Clarke 'cringes' on TV sex; should be 'subtle'
Sex sells and the same concept applies to film and television, which is probably why so many female actresses are standing up against the objectification of women in media content. Take Game of Thrones' very own Emilia Clarke, for example, who has some choice words for filmmakers out there. Not that she's biting the hand that feeds, but she does have a strong opinion on how sex is portrayed on film and TV, the Mirror reports.
In a conversation with the Daily Mail, the 28-year-old actress said, "Sex scenes should be more subtle. I’m British, so I cringe at that sort of thing anyway—I can’t stand it."
Clarke went on to say: "I don’t want to have sex thrown in my face and I’ve always thought the suggestion is so much more titillating than the act itself."
While she doesn't call out Game of Thrones per se, the actress said, "Most sex scenes you see in films or on TV are gratuitous and they’re usually just to attract an audience. On screen, the subtler the better."
The Huffington Post reported in April that Clarke praised Game of Thrones for creating strong female characters.
"You start to see all of the women in the show accepting who they are and embodying that with such power that it's palpable," Clarke said. "I think that's the beauty of the show: as women, we accept our femininity and take strength from it, as opposed to trying to hide it and behave in a masculine way."
Clarke spoke out about Game of Thrones after critics slammed the show for being misogynistic. The Huffington Post reported that Yahoo! TV's Sam Moore wrote, "Very few of the sex or nude scenes have meant anything in terms of the narrative or character development. And those that have don't see the men in their birthday suits."
Moore also wrote that despite being set in a patriarchal world, "I can think of much better and original ways to show gender inequality than to strip the oppressed of their clothes and turn them, unironically into sex objects for the panting audience."
Despite the arguments that Game of Thrones continues to inspire among critics and viewers, the show will carry on with its 6th season in 2016. In fact, IB Times reports that according to Clarke, there will be an interesting storyline for the Mother of Dragons in the upcoming season.
Clarke said, "It’s just go, go, go, go. Shocking moment to shocking moment. Epic moment to epic moment. It’s mental; it’s epic. And definitely Dany’s a part of it."
