Michael Stuhlbarg joins the star-studded cast of Marvel's newest movie "Dr. Strange" as Dr. Nicodemus West.
According to Cinema Blend, Stuhlbag will join the movie cast starring Benedict Cumberbatch who will play Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, Chiwetel Ejifor as antagonist Baron Mordo and Rachel McAdams as the iteration of Night Nurse. Stuhlbag's character, Dr. West, is a rival scientist of Dr. Strange.
The production of "Dr. Strange" will begin this December in London. It will be directed by Scott Derrickson with a script written by Jon Spaihts. It will be produced by Marvel's Kevin Feige, according to Variety.
According to Comic Vine, Dr. Strange was an expert surgeon but damaged his hands after a car accident. He sought the help of the Ancient One in Tibet to cure his hands but the mystic refused to heal his hands. The Ancient One was then attacked by Baron Mordo, an ex disciple of the former who aims to gain more power. Stephen took to learning magic to stop Mordo from his quest. Once he thwarted the assassination plot on the mystic, he trained and became Earth's new Sorcerer Supreme.
According to Marvel, Dr. Strange is a very powerful sorcerer who invokes his power from entities or objects.
"Strange's magical repertoire includes energy projection and manipulation, matter transformation, animation of inanimate objects, teleportation, illusion-casting, mesmerism, thought projection, astral projection, dimensional travel, time travel and mental possession, to name a few," the site stated.
Additionally, Strange is also a martial artist and an athlete.
Before seeking the mystic, IGN reports that it was Dr. West who operated on the hands of Strange after the accident. West reportedly admired Strange's surgical skills and was racked with guilt when he was unable to save Strange's hands. Additionally, West would also study magic under the Ancient One but could not complete the training. In the comics "Doctor Strange: The Oath," he was shown as Strange's enemy.
McAdams will reportedly be playing Dr. Strange's night-shift nurse Christine Palmer.
"Palmer is the primary protagonist of Night Nurse #4 from 1973," a report by Latino-Review states. Palmer's background involved being a surgical assistant, which would make a good counter-point to Dr. Stephen Strange's surgeon.
The site adds that it was previously believed that McAdams was going to play Clea who is Strange's supernatural love interest in the comics.
"Doctor Strange" will be coming to theaters Nov. 4, 2016.
