Android One is the low-cost program Google has launched in 2014. Android One started its journey in India and later expanded to other countries like Indonesia, Phillippines, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh in 2015.
According to Investopedia, Alphabet Inc., the American multinational conglomerate and the parent company of Google is planning to launch Android devices in the US at a price range of $200-$300 by mid-2017.
Google's original plan was to launch low-cost smartphones to extend its reach in the emerging economies. Initially, Google launched a basic smartphone installed with Android one under $100. The pricing and design took several changes and subsequently, both price and design are finally frozen to carry out mass production. Google has already relaxed design specifications to crack the price further south to confront the challenge from low-cost Chinese smartphone market.
The other blot on the Android platform is that the software updates or patches are delayed compared to its arch-rivals. Apple is very quick to release the new software upgrade or patch to its customers. This one of the key features in the Android One built smartphones. Google plans to synchronize the software updates across all devices frequently.
With Android One smartphones, Google intends to break the Apple's majority share in the smartphone market in the US, which is at 43 percent as per data released by comScore in Jan 2016. As per 9To5 Google, Google is in talks with LG to manufacture cost-effective smartphones to be launched in the US.
Google has offered few benefits for OEMs willing to participate in the Android One. Google will fund the ad campaign for those OEMs who participate in Android One project and follow Google's guidelines. The idea originated from Pixel smartphones advertising, which is a huge success for Google. The company wants to replicate the same advertising model to garner success.
