The common mantra of five a day has been the official health advice for centuries. However, latest studies claim that eating ten portions of fruits and vegetables help battle diseases. This would prevent 7200 cancer deaths as well as 14000 deaths due to stroke every year.

According to The Guardian, the researchers at Imperial College London had found that ten 80g of vegetables and fruits might reduce the risk of cancer by 13 percent. That's not all, eating fruits and vegetables might also cut down the risk of heart diseases such as stroke by 24 percent.

'Fruit and vegetables have been shown to reduce cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and to boost the health of our blood vessels and immune system. This may be due to the complex network of nutrients they hold," said Dr Dagfinn Aune, the lead author. Dr. Aune said these contain antioxidants that reduce the DNA damages that reduce the cancer risk.

He further added that people should eat more than ten portions of healthy veggies and fruits. This is because eating higher portions have good health benefits. Interestingly, the NHS has always been desperate to feed people five portions of fruits and vegetables, be it frozen, juiced or canned Daily Mail Online reported.

The UK average suggested four portions a day, with only a quarter of men aged 19 years to 64 years reaching the target. On the other hand, only 28 percent women reached the target. These researchers had analyzed data from about 95 studies based on vegetables and fruits intake. They have found that consuming ten portions of the veggies and fruits have a chance to reduce cancer risks and premature death by three percent.

The study that was published in International Journal of Epidemiology, also identified which fruits and vegetables offer the ultimate protection against diseases. These include apples, citrus fruits and pears that offer protection against heart diseases. Leafy vegetables and salads also offer the same effect.
