Google has pulled out the March Security update for Nexus after the update has breached the SafetyNet feature of the Android OS. Google has recently launched the March Security update on March 7, 2017.
SafetyNet is a useful application to ascertain if the device OS tampers or not. It is also crucial as it authenticates safety for running apps including Android Pay. Incidentally, many Google Nexus users have reported the problem of on Mar 9 on Reddit as reported in Android Police.
However, Google said it is aware of the issue and investigating on it. Immediately after a spike in complaints, Google has withdrawn the update from Nexus Factory Images and Nexus OTA. Hopefully, Google will find a solution at the earliest as many users were stranded.
Google has rolled out March Security update sized 39MB in three phases. In the first phase, Google has selected 10000 units randomly and was given OTA. Another 10% were given OTA after few days and for the rest, OTA will be rolled out subsequently, as per GSM Arena.
Google Nexus, made by Huawei, launched in September 2015 was an instant success. Currently, it is running on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. But, Nexus 6 phones which are under Beta Program for Android Nougat 7.1.2 version are not eligible for March Security patch. The patch is intended to fix the vulnerabilities and bugs in the Android OS, which is particularly susceptible to bugs and hacks.
Google said that one of the key issues resolved with this March Security Update is the remote execution of code through emails, browsing, MMS or processing media files. Google is confident of this security patch as no such incidents were reported after release.
Though Google has released the March security update on a number of Google devices, it seems only Nexus 6 devices are incompatible with the update. The incident highlights that Google is releasing software updates without testing completely on all platforms.
