Something about this time of year makes you want to snuggle up under the covers, eat your favorite comfort foods, and hibernate. Other than going to work and school, most people spend the winter months at home. The cold temperatures seem to drain your energy and make being lazy more enticing. While there's nothing wrong with lounging around occasionally, prolonged inactivity can harm your health and wellness.

Physical inactivity can cause weight gain, body aches, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular health problems. It also weakens your immune system, which increases your chances of getting sick. Although wrapping up under that down comforter is tempting, finding ways to stay fit and active during the winter is essential. Below are some fun suggestions.

Gym Classes

Make the most of your gym membership by signing up for exercise classes. They're a lot more fun than using the machines and weights and are the perfect activity to keep your health intact. A Zumba class is one of the most popular options for gym-goers. There's nothing like working up a sweat to the sound of upbeat Latin tunes that are sure to get you moving. Of course, there are other options like step aerobics, cycling, kickboxing, yoga, and more to suit your interests. You can add to the fun by bringing a loved one as a workout buddy.

Winter Sports

You don't have to be an Olympic athlete to enjoy the thrill, excitement, and health benefits of winter sports. Winter activities, such as skiing, hockey, snowboarding, and sledding, are great ways to stay fit and active. Many of these activities take place outdoors, allowing you to get some fresh air, cleanse your lungs, and boost your immune system. The movements, energy, and effort it takes to master winter sports will get your blood pumping, raise your body temperature, strengthen your muscles, and lift your spirits.

Head To The Mall

If being outdoors isn't your thing, you can always get some cardio in at a nearby shopping mall. Start at one end of the building and walk at a steady pace until you reach the other end. Try not to make pit stops in stores until you've completed your walk. It's also best to visit the mall early in the morning as the crowds are smaller. You can bring a loved one with you or throw on some headphones, listen to music, and zone out by yourself.

Get Outside With The Kids

Break up the monotony of your winter routines by taking the kids outside to have some fun. Whether you jump in leaf piles, build snowmen,  have a snowball fight, make snow angels, take the dog out for a walk, or chase them around the playground at a nearby park, it gets everyone outside and active.

Go Dancing With Your Partner (or Friends)

When was the last time you and your significant other went out dancing? If it's been a while, now is the perfect time to plan a fun date night. Many local clubs and bars host events with live bands, great food, and even better drinks. Whether you like hip-hop and RnB or reggae and Latin music, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Just a few hours on your feet grooving to the beat is all you need to stay fit and active.

If you're not much of a club or bar person, you can also take dance classes with your friends or partners and reap the same benefits. From tap and salsa to African and jazz, there are classes to help you perfect your moves, shape and tone your body, and feel good doing it.

Don't let the cold weather cause you to hibernate for the next few months. Staying active is essential to your health and wellness. Keep your health intact and reduce your risk of contracting common winter illnesses by incorporating physical activity into your daily routine. The above ideas will help you stay fit while having a good time.
