The highly iconic '90s kids' TV series "Power Rangers" will be rebooted and made into a new movie, according to reports.
Kids who grew up in the '90s and even kids today will experience the thrill and action of watching the iconic team of superheroes all over again in the all new "Power Rangers" reboot. According to Heroic Hollywood, the movie is set to be released in theaters on Jan. 13, 2017.
The plot of the new "Power Rangers" movie will be similar to the original series and will revolve around Zack, Jason, Billy, Kimberly and Trini, a group of 16-year-old teenagers who live in fictional Angel Grove. Their "ranger" powers came to be when they discovered power coins under a dinosaur fossil of a T-Rex. Together, they became the Alpha 5 with Zordon as their guide to fight off evil forces.
The main antagonist, Rita Repulsa, is trying to remake Goldar, a powerful humanoid ape warrior that will wreak havoc on earth, by robbing banks for their gold. The Alpha 5 discovers that they only have 71 hours before Rita can successfully bring Goldar back to life. The outcome will be known in theaters when "Power Rangers" comes to the movies.
According to CrossMap, writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who are responsible for highly acclaimed movies such as "Thor," "Star Trek 3" and "X-Men: First Class," were assigned to do the screenplay and story. It will be directed by Dean Israelite.
With the evolution of technology and cinematic techniques, here are some things that can be expected in the reboot film:
1.) Better CGI and no more Japanese stock footage
According to Movie Pilot, the beloved children's TV series used stock footage from the Japanese Super Sentai Show. The CGI for monsters will also be undoubtedly better than the original show.
2.) Real fighting scenes
MoviePilot notes that with the Japanese stock footage taken out, the "Power Rangers" movie will hopefully get epic fighting scenes that are not only limited to robot CGI, but real hand-to-hand combat with the Alpha 5 against Rita's little minions.
3.) The cast could be star-studded
There is no word yet over who is casted to be who but speculations are all over the internet. According to CrossMap, stars like Elizabeth Olsen, Liam Hemsworth, Meryl Streep and Chloe Moretz have been tapped to be part of the cast for the new movie. The original Green Ranger Jason David Frank and Steve Cardenas are also highly interested to be in the movie. It remains to be seen if the two will be able to reprise their roles or slated for another.
