Shannen Doherty has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. The "Charmed" actress is also in a legal battle against her ex-manager for health insurance payment lapses.
Doherty, 44, claims she would have known her breast cancer diagnosis earlier should her LA-based former business manager Tanner Mainstain Glynn & Johnson firm and its partner Steven Blatt paid premium for her health insurance last year, according to USA Today.
The report cited that Doherty's lawsuit stated that the actress was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in March 2015 and earlier treatment would have likely stopped the cancer from spreading. In its more advanced stage, it may be possible that Doherty may undergo mastectomy or some other form of more aggressive treatments.
The lapse in health insurance payments allegedly resulted in the cancellation of the her coverage. In turn, she was unable to receive medical care until the next enrollment period in 2015.
According to the New York Daily News, in addition to failing to pay premium health care payments, the lawsuit also included financial mismanagement, fee overcharging and tardy tax payment.
"The relationship between a business manager and its client is based on trust, in honesty and competence. That trust was violated here, and we hope that the defendants will correct it in a responsible manner," Doherty's lawyer Devin McRae stated, as reported by the outlet.
According to Doherty's lawsuit, she claimed that her business manager and Blatt "specialized in fleecing actors and entertainment industry professionals," US Magazine reports. The report added that the accused were incompetent and thieves, they also set deceive and "set up bogus transactions" to cover up their tracks.
Tanner Mainstain's firm responded to the lawsuit and responded with:
"Tanner Mainstain is saddened to learn that Ms. Doherty is suffering from cancer and wishes her a full recovery. However, the claim that Tanner Mainstain caused her to be uninsured, prevented her from seeking medical care, or somehow contributed to her cancer is patently false. Tanner Mainstain will aggressively defend all of Ms. Doherty's claims in court," according to The Hollywood Reporter's report.
PEOPLE received an exclusive statement from Doherty confirming her cancer diagnosis. The actress added that she is taking care of her body and continuing to stay positive despite her circumstances. She also thanked her family, friends, fans and doctors who have supported her through her difficult ordeal.
According to the Daily Mail, Doherty's husband since 2011, photographer Kurt Iswarienko is also suing the same firm in a separate lawsuit similar in nature to his wife's, claiming that the firm mismanaged their assets.
