As Michael Schumacher recovers from his terrible skiing accident several years ago, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel fight over the legendary F1 drivers mantel.

For the young Vettel, Michael Schumacher was the F1 racer to emulate and to be, reports Economic Times. The German faced current world champion, Lewis Hamilton, this past weekend at the Italian Grand Prix in the Monza circuit.

Vettel stepped into the Monza tarmac this weekend, wearing the famous scarlet jumpsuit of a Ferrari driver for the first time. Even though the four-time champion has already won a race in Monza, this year's Italian Grand Prix offered a new experience for Vettel, thanks to the Tifosi - passionate Ferrari fans.

Before this weekend's race, Vettel said: "Obviously I've heard lots of good things. I've been here before so obviously [I have seen] the passion for Ferrari, so obviously very much looking forward to becoming part of that."

Vettel adds, "So far we have had a great season. This our home Grand Prix as a team and since I didn't have a home one this year I adopt this one as well and hopefully we can make it a good one."

Vettel wound up in third place this weekend after the one-lapse speed sessions. While his Ferrari teammate, Kimi Raikkonen, finished in second place.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton was unbeatable this weekend at the Italian Grand Prix, states Business Insider. The F1 world champion is getting closer and closer to Schumacher's legendary racing status.

According to Telegraph UK, Hamilton got his seventh consecutive pole this weekend, a feat only very few F1 drivers have achieved. So far, only Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, and Ayrton Senna have managed to win more than six successive pole positions in F1 history.

If Hamilton's winning streak continues, he is poised to beat Senna's all-time record of eight consecutive pole wins, beating the likes of Michael Schumacher.

Speaking of rivals, races, and great F1 racers of old, Mika Hakkinen wished Michael Schumacher a quick recovery recently on a blog entry at the McLaren website.

The former rival turned old friend of Schumacher's wrote about the 2000 Belgian Grand Prix and how hard it was to keep ahead of Schumacher.

"Through the next few turns Michael tried his best to harry me into a mistake, chucking his Ferrari around from left to right behind me, in an effort to unsettle me..." Hakkinen said.

At the end he writes: "I hope and pray that those encouraging signs are continuing still... Miracles sometimes occur, and I for one dearly hope that a miracle occurs for Michael some time soon."

Currently, very few details have been released about Schumacher's health status, since his family has ordered a media blackout on his condition, says Vine Report.

However, Schumacher's manager, Sabine Kehm, told TVNZ a couple months ago that the F1 driver is improving. His fully recovery, however, will take some time.
