Jurassic World undeniably dominated the box office and captured the minds of film viewers worldwide this year, yielding a $1.6 billion in total sales. This makes for a pretty successful venture that the filmmakers are banking on for its succeeding films. You read that right—films. Director Colin Trevorrow recently opened up during a Jurassic Chat Podcast that this year's film will indeed be followed by two more, Screencrush reports.

Trevorrow said during the podcast that he always had a three-movie story arc in mind, and now that Jurassic World has made its mark as a still very profitable story amongs moviegoers, there's a lot of room for the filmmakers to do so. He said, "We looked at it as a trilogy from the very beginning. We designed the whole thing that way. And, honestly, the whole trilogy is articulated in Jurassic Park."

Trevorrow is currently co-writing and executive producing what fans have called Jurassic World 2, but will not return to direct due to his commitment to Star Wars: Episode 9. However, he says that the succeeding film is inspired by the 1993 original film.

Entertainment Weekly reports that according to Trevorrow, "Jurassic World is all based on Ian Malcolm’s quote...'You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you knew what you had, you patented it, you packaged it, slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you want to sell it.'"

"That to me is Jurassic World," he continued. "That’s why I had all the product placement, that’s what it was."

He also admitted that the sequel will be a different film from the first, and that audiences won't have to endure another humans-running-away-from-dinosaurs-on-an-island movie. He said, "I feel like the audience has given us permission, to a certain extent, to take this to the next level."

Trevorrow also explained, "I feel very strongly that it’s not about more dinosaurs or bigger and better dinosaurs. It’s about using this as a starting point for a much larger story about our relationship with these animals, and with animals in general, and the dynamic created by bringing them back to life."

As for Owen and Claire, it was already announced that Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are coming back to reprise their roles, and Trevorrow said that the story will continue to explore their relationship.

He said, "Owen is going to be in it, Claire is in it and neither are going to be in the same place we left them in the first movie. And even though Claire is the one who evolves the most over the trilogy, it’s her story that mirrors this changing world. Owen has s--- to deal with. They’ve both opened Pandora’s Box in Jurassic World and both of them are responsible for different elements of it."

Trevorrow promises, however, that they will keep them involved in the story "without it feeling contrived."

Jurassic World's sequel is set to be released on June 22, 2018.
