Nintendo NX release date, news & update: game console to rival Xbox One, PS4 with 'industry-leading' technology

According to reports, Nintendo's NX is more powerful than its rival competitors as it is rumored to be a hybrid gaming platform.

Nintendo has been keeping mum as to what the NX is, but according to the report by Forbes, development kits for the NX are starting to be sent out and a handful of developers may already have their hands on a few. According to rumors, the NX could be the next generation console for Nintendo. According to Venture Beat, the Wii U has not taken off and the 3DS hardware is old.

"We are increasingly of the idea that Nintendo might launch the NX in 2016 because of the softness of 3DS and Wii U," said David Gibson, an analyst for Macquarie Capital Securities, in a report by the Wall Street Journal. "They also said Nintendo would aim to put industry-leading chips in the NX devices, after criticism that the Wii U's capabilities didn't match those of competitors."

As to why Wii U failed to take off despite bringing something new to console gaming, Shigeru Miyamoto stated that the device was "late."

"I think unfortunately what ended up happening was that tablets themselves appeared in the marketplace and evolved very, very rapidly, and unfortunately the Wii system launched at a time where the uniqueness of those features were perhaps not as strong as they were when we had first begun developing them," Mario creator Miyamoto said in an interview with NPR. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they're not as big of a hit as we would like to hope. After Wii U, we're hoping that next time it will be a very big hit."

According to the outlet, the NX will come with "industry-leading chips" to increase their competition against more popular consoles.

"The exact shape of the NX hardware isn't yet clear. People familiar with the development plans said Nintendo would likely include both a console and at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use," the report by the Journal stated.

According to a tweet of the reporter for the Journal who wrote the story, the new NX might "have more than two devices" and confirmed that it will come with "powerful chips" and will be available by 2016.

Following the Journal's report on the Wii U, the console itself is a handheld and console. According to Kotaku, the Wii U was designed like a traditional console but with its controller having a screen which can be used as another display or the main display if the user favors it instead of using a television. However, the Wii U controller has short distance connectivity and can't be untethered like the portable 3DS
