Justin Bieber wins big at the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards on Sunday night, garnering five awards out of six nominations.
The Canadian singer took home five MTV gongs, including the prize for Biggest Fans, beating One Direction. MTV received more than 500 million votes worldwide for this event, says Variety.
Bieber bagged awards from several other categories including Best Male, Best Worldwide Act in North America, Best Look and Best Collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo for the hit single, 'Where Are You Now?,' according to a winners list published by Daily Mail.
The 21-year-old celebrity was one award shy from making a sweep. One Direction prevented the sweep by winning Best Pop Group, says ABC News.
"It's been a long couple of years. I just feel it's awesome to be recognized for my music," Bieber said to thousands of screaming fans. After receiving the Best Male award, Bieber went back to the stage to perform his hit song 'What Do You Mean?' says Daily Mail.
Another big winner during the music awards night was Ed Sheeran. Sheeran took home the prize for Best World Stage and Best Live Act.
According to the Daily Mail, Sheeran appeared surprised at winning the award saying, "Sorry I missed all of that because I was having a conversation.. What award is this? Best live? Sound."
Taylor Swift got a whopping nine nominations but only collected the Best Song prize for 'Bad Blood.' Other winners for the event include Rihanna for Best Female, Shawn Mendes for Best New Act, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis winning Best Video for 'Downtown.' Nicki Minaj won the award for Best Hip Hop but was unable to attend the event.
Andrea Bocelli sang 'Time to Say Goodbye' during the awards night which marked the tenor's first performance at the MTV Europe Music Awards.
Despite nursing a leg injury, "Orange is the New Black" actress joined Sheeran in hosting the event, says Hollywood Reporter. She just finished shooting Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in Cape Town, South Africa.
"I just got off of shooting an action film, hence the cane because I've torn my leg. I just tore my calf muscle five times, no big deal," she told reporters for the publication.
Variety's report states that the Milan show was the first show being broadcasted using a virtual reality livestream. An MTV EMA app allowed people from the US and in various areas around the world to view the red carpet and the awards ceremony.
