Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's By the Sea debuts during the American Film Institute Festival in just a few days, and the two are already doing the media rounds to promote the film, which brings the pair back together on the big screen following Mr. and Mrs. Smith back in 2005. Entertainment Weekly reports that By the Sea is written and directed by Jolie Pitt herself, and tells the story of a struggling, dysfunctional married couple in the 1970s.
"We watch this couple go off the track and we wait to see if it gets more unhealthy, or if they will recover," Jolie Pitt told EW. "I think too often people go through very painful transformative experiences and they don’t stay together. They abandon each other."
The dashing Pitt graces the cover of the Winter issue of V Magazine, where he also talks about working with his wife. Photographed by Inez and Vinoodh, the two covers show a close up of Pitt behind shades, with his hand touching his lips, while the other cover shows him looking at the camera with his chin up and his hands on his hips, showing off his toned torso through a long-sleeved shirt.
Elle reports that Pitt spoke of his relationship with his wife, saying, "I operated on pure instinct. Angie and I have too much history and understanding of each other to question beyond there."
How they work perfectly in real life and on screen may be attributed to their chemistry, as well. The two can be seen mostly apart in the enigmatic trailer, until Pitt's character provokes Jolie Pitt, saying, "Do you hate me? You wanna hurt me? Hurt me." The clip ends with Pitt walking out of a room where Jolie Pitt lies on the floor, seemingly unconscious. Watch the trailer below.
By the Sea was shot in Malta, just right after the the Jolie-Pitt wedding in France. According to Pitt, "It was probably not the wisest way to spend a honeymoon. But then again, fighting to make something together. What better metaphor for marriage? It’s not a film that responds to the current zeitgeist or storytelling – rather, a quiet, mature look at the challenges of love and adult loss."
Pitt also shares that it comes down to them being partners and parents, saying, "At the end of the day, we get to be parents, greeting our lovely, crazy children and talking about their day, making sure they brush their teeth, so all the tension from our day is tabled…until the next."
By the Sea makes it debut at the AFI Fest on November 5.
