The 2011 film adaptation of the late Stieg Larsson's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" novel was a massive success, earning $232.6 million worldwide (the film cost $90 million to make), but the process of creating the sequels was met with several obstacles.
For one, the sequel was delayed due to problems with the script, which was originally written by Steve Zaillian, IGN reported in August 2012. A year later, IndieWire reported that Andrew Kevin Walker got on board for a rewrite, but by that time, so much money had been poured out by Sony that there were doubts about if and when the film would be released.
Fincher told Film Divider in September 2014, "I think because it [Sony] already has spent millions of dollars on the rights and the script so it will result in something. The script that we now have a huge potential, I can reveal as much as it is extremely different from the book."
While there hasn't been any news regarding The Girl Who Played with Fire, Entertainment Weekly reports that Sony is currently developing a film based on The Girl in the Spider’s Web, a novel written by David Lagercrantz. The novel follows Larsson's characters Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist as they once again team up for an investigative journey involving cybercriminals, spies, and government agents.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, award-winning British writer and director Steven Knight is already in talks with the studio to write the film. However, both Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara will not come back to reprise their roles as Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander, respectively. Director David Fincher, who also worked on the hit Gone Girl, will also be absent from the project.
Producer Scott Rudin is coming back to produce the upcoming film, alongside Amy Pascal and Elizabeth Cantillon. THR reports that for now, Sony is looking to release Spider's Web before Girl Who Played With Fire, which script has cost them mid-seven figures.
The Wrap reports that Sony is looking to cast Alicia Vikander in the role of Lisbeth Salander. Vikander is an up-and-coming actress who currently stars alongside Bradley Cooper in Burnt, and has appeared in dramas such as The Danish Girl, Anna Karenina, A Royal Affair, and Testament of Youth. She is also set to appear in the Justin Chadwick-directed Tulip Fever, which comes out in 2016, and The Light Between Oceans with Michael Fassbender, which hits theaters in January 2017.
