It's been three years since we first saw the rather odd on-screen coupling of Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth as the titular characters in "Snow White and the Huntsman", which gave us a fresh look at a fairy tale princess. Universal Pictures' Snow White was a warrior who defeated the Evil Queen Ravenna to regain her kingdom, much like in the fairy tale viewers know so well, providing a strong female lead.
Universal Pictures's sequel, coming this 2016, sees another departure in the form of Stewart or her character no longer being part of the story. Instead, viewers will get to see the return of multi-award winning actress Charlize Theron's Queen Ravenna being resurrected by her younger sister, Freya Ice Queen, played by Golden Globe Award-winning actress Emily Blunt. Joining the cast is Jessica Chastain, who most recently graced the big screen with Ridley Scott's "The Martian" and Guillermo del Toro's "Crimson Peak". Chastain plays a warrior who turns on the Ice Queen in the name of love.
Formerly titled "The Huntsman", the film had undergone several changes due to the departure of Frank Darabont, who was supposed to direct the sequel. Deadline reported that visual effects specialist Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who won an Academy Award for the first film, came on board to helm the sequel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has been renamed "The Huntsman Winter's War" and Universal Pictures released several posters featuring their lead characters, namely The Warrior (Chastain), The Evil Queen (Theron), The Ice Queen (Blunt), and The Huntsman (Hemsworth).
The trailer features a voice over warning viewers, "If it's a fairy tale you're hoping for, prepare yourself for so much more" over Halsey's track, "Castle", a fitting soundtrack to the ominous reunion of the two cunning queens.
Variety reports that "Snow White and the Huntsman" earned $400 million globally in 2012 with its $170 budget, so the studio must be hopeful for another massive hit with the addition of new characters in the sequel. Watch the trailer below and see Universal's official synopsis, as per Yahoo! Movies, below.
Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen—including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)—only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love.
When Freya learns of her sister’s demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power. But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable…unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen’s cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another.
The Huntsman Winter's War is set to hit theaters come April 22, 2016.
