Filming has started for "Doctor Strange," with "Sherlock" Benedict Cumberbatch playing the lead role. Check out the details on casting for the film's other major characters, trailer and release date here.
According to CNET, the superhero movie will be shot in a number of sites, including New York, London, Hong Kong and Nepal. Benedict Cumberbatch is taking the role of Sorcerer Supreme Dr. Stephen Strange, a man bestowed with magical powers.
Marvel reveals the synopsis as follows:
"'Doctor Strange' follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions."
Other celebrities included in the film include Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Tilda Swinton. Their specific roles in the film have not been revealed although Londonist believes Ejiofor will be playing the antagonist Baron Mordo while Tibetan mystic Rilda Swinton might be taking the role of the Ancient One.
Ejiofor has shied away from confirming on taking this role during a recent interview on Vulture. Both Cumberbatch and Ejiofor were seen on set in Nepal.
Other confirmed cast members include Scott Adkins and Amy Landecker. Although their names have not been listed on Marvel's site, Slash Film says both celebrities were added after the start of filming.
The film is being directed by Scott Derickson and edited by Sabrina Plisco with Stan Lee as one of the movie's executive producers. In a star-studded superhero movie, only Derickson and Plisco have not been involved in any related Marvel film.
CNET speculates that McAdams will taking on the character Clea, Dr. Strange's love interest, or occult expert Morgana Blessing.
Mikkelsen could play Clea's Uncle Dormammu, who also happens to be one of Doctor Strange's arch enemies. Another possibility is that Mikkelsen will take on the role of Nightmare, a demon who tortures his victims in their sleep.
Variety sources indicate that Michael Sthulbarg will be playing Nicodemus West, one of Strange's rivals in the field of science.
Doctor Strange is part of Marvel's Phase 3 films. The film will be shown in cinemas on Nov. 4, 2016.

At some point, Uproxx reports that icons Neil Gaiman and Guillermo also considered working on 'Doctor Strange.' As early as 2008, the two have been discussing their interest.
However, rumors indicate that their perspective and approach might have put Marvel off, including ditching the iconic Doctor Strange suit.
