Thinning hair solutions: top 3 causes to watch out for
- comments
Both men and women are suffering from hair loss. Although, the latter is less likely to lose their crowning glory as compares to their male counterpart because of the baldness pattern among men, which is mostly hereditary in nature, wrote Health.com.
On the average, humans are shedding hair by about 100 strands a day. While some of the lost hairs are falling naturally, some of our daily routines like brushing and washing the hair could contribute to hair fall. While, this is a natural occurrence, there are also cases when people are losing hair more than what they can grow back.
The excessive hair loss, or alopecia, is one such condition where people shed hair faster than what can be replaced and, worse, the hair just stop growing completely. If you are experiencing hair loss or hair thinning, you might want to know what are the possible causes and what can you do about it. Check out top 3 causes to watch out for,
1. One of the possible cause of hair thinning is genetics. One condition linked to the cause is called alopecia areata where the person could develop random bald spots on the scalp, according to the Daily Mail. About 1 in 5 of those experiencing this could be blamed to family history. However, there are also instances when alopecia areata is linked with auto-immune conditions, such as eczema and dermatitis.
The most common treatments in this case are prescription steroids, which are applied on the scalp. They can also be injected or sometimes taken orally. The treatment helps in reducing inflammation and proved to be successful in about 70 percent of cases.
2. Another possible cause could be a result of a deficiency in vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin D, vitamin B12 or iron, according to an alopecia specialist Dr Vicky Jolliffe who is also a consultant dermatologist at the Royal London Hospital. Some of the causes of the deficiency are over-exercise, diets and illness.
According to Dr Jolliffe, patients can opt for hair-boosting supplements, but it is important to seek professional help beforehand.
3. One of the most anxiety-inducing and confidence-killing hair thinning conditions is the male-pattern baldness among men. And, although, there is no known cure so far for this, there are medications that can help in slowing it down. One such example of this is the FDA-approved Minoxidil, which is an over-the-counter treatment, according to WebMD.
