'Wonder Woman' Trailer & Cast News: Nicole Kidman Passes On Hippolyta Role, Robin Wright Confirmed To Play Entirely Different Character [Rumors]

Back in November, The Wrap exclusively reported that Nicole Kidman was in talks to join Warner Bros.' "Wonder Woman", which stars Gal Gadot as the titular character. The Wrap said that Kidman was undergoing negotiations to play "a high-ranking Amazonian warrior," but unfortunately, the deal has now fallen through.
IGN is now reporting that while it was assumed that Golden Globe Award-winning actress Robin Wright will take on the role that was offered to Kidman, Variety's Justin Kroll explains that Wright, who has appeared in Netflix's "House of Cards," and films "Moneyball" and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," was already cast before Kidman was offered the role that is believed to be Hippolyta. According to Comicbook, Hippolyta is the Queen of the Amazons and mother to Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman herself.
In a series of tweets, Kroll said, "As you know Kidman's dates didn't work out so they are trying to figure out whether to just give Robin Wright that role or find another star."
"Don't know what role Wright currently has but it isn't Hippolyta like others believed, it's actually another role," he explained. "In fact, Wright's deal for her unknown role had closed before Kidman even had an offer, so we'll just have to see what ends up happening."
Last month, Warner Bros. revealed in a press release that principal photography is currently underway on "Wonder Woman", which stars Gadot as the DC superhero, Wright, "Star Trek" and "Into the Woods"' Chris Pine as Captain Steve Trevor, Danny Huston of "Clash of the Titans" and "X-Men Wolverine", David Thewlis of the "Harry Potter" films and "The Theory of Everything", Ewen Bremner of "Exodus: Gods and Kings" and "Snowpiercer", Saïd Taghmaoui of "American Hustle", Elena Anaya of "The Skin I Live In" and Lucy Davis of "Shaun of the Dead".
Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins, who worked on 2003's "Monster" and AMC's "The Killing", and is produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder, and Deborah Snyder. Richard Suckle, Stephen Jones, Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns, and Rebecca Roven will serve as executive producers. According to the press release, principal photography will take place in locations in the U.K., France, and Italy.
Yahoo! Movies reports that earlier this month, Time Warner Chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes said during the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference that he is adamant that "Wonder Woman" will bring in more female audiences to the franchise that caters mostly to fanboys.
"We think this could bring an under-represented female audience to this genre that frankly has not been served well in the past and that could be exciting," he said.
"Wonder Woman" debuts in theaters on June 23, 2017.
