After the record-breaking success of "Avatar," many fans are looking forward to seeing the sequel. There is no doubt that there are high expectations for "Avatar 2" and James Cameron recognizes this. In fact, he makes sure that the script will not be a disappointment.
Cameron wants to prove that the success of the first film is not an accident. So, he is doing another pass in his script for "Avatar 2" and the other two sequels. He is clearly not taking any chances and wants everything to be as perfect as possible.
"I'm in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now," the Oscar-award winning director told Entertainment Weekly. "Just refining. That's in parallel with the design process. The design process is very mature at this point. We've been designing for about a year and a half. All the characters, settings and creatures are all pretty much [set]."
Since the hardest part of research and development are done, the filmmaker was asked if creating a new installment for the franchise in the big screens is not as challenging as the first one anymore. However, the answer was a big "No" while he laughed.
"Because you have to challenge yourself. Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn't just some big fluke the first time. So we've got to deliver. I've created a nice rod for my own back, so they say," Cameron explained.
Meanwhile, aside from the polishing the script for "Avatar 2," Cameron talks about Cirque du Soleil's "Toruk- The First Flight." The show was inspired from his blockbuster film "Avatar." The Canadian filmmaker disclosed that the Toruk show will have artistic influence on the upcoming films, Montreal Gazette reported.
"I think there are some nice ideas that were developed by the artists on Toruk," Cameron said. "I tell my artists, 'Hey, make sure we're not ignoring what they've done.' Why wouldn't it be a creative feedback loop? They fed on our designs. There are a few things I liked in the costume design. So it's nice for me to see how other people interpret the Na'vi world and the world of Pandora."
Cameron explained that they are targeting Christmas of 2017 for the release date "Avatar 2." But, he does not consider the announced date as important as the fact of getting all three films done. The three sequels will be dropped a year apart, which he calls as a meta-narrative. "Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story," he added.
"Avatar 2" will hit the big screens on Dec. 25, 2017.
