'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Cast & Release Date: Kurt Russell Confirms Negotiations to Star in The Sequel, Admits 'I’ve Never Seen It'

"Guardians of the Galaxy" was one of 2014's biggest summer hits, earning a total of $773.3 million worldwide, as per Box Office Mojo. It further catapulted "Parks and Recreation" star Chris Pratt into stardom, proving him worthy of being a leading man and a Marvel superhero at that.
While most of the movie-going population has seen the award-winning film, one person admits that he hasn't. Entertainment Weekly reports that Kurt Russell, who has been approached for a role in the upcoming sequel, has in fact not yet seen the Marvel superhero film.
"[The Guardians rumor] is one of those things that’s really funny," Russell said during an interview with Wolfpop's "Happy Sad Confused" podcast. "The way the world works today is very different from back in the day when nobody knew about anything. I literally got a phone call two days ago about this."
Cinemablend reports that according to the 64-year-old actor, "Many times I’ve heard ‘That’s a really fun movie, a really good movie [with] great characters.’ I don’t know it!"
"I didn’t realize [James Gunn] had written and directed it," the actor, who is in talks to play Star-Lord/Peter Quill's father, admitted. "So we talked to each other on the phone and I just had to be honest and say, ‘Thank you for considering me, I have to read it and I have to watch the movie because I can’t bring anything for you. I got nothing to offer here.’ I’m amazed to get asked about this because everybody knows more about it than I do...it’s a little weird."
Russell also spoke to The Wall Street Journal, casually commenting, "I'm always the last guy on the block to get this stuff figured out."
The actor laughs, saying, "I didn't see that movie, so I don't know anything about it, but evidently this was a popular movie."
"People are talking about it, and I haven't even read it yet, I haven't even seen that movie. I gotta see that movie!" Russell said. "I feel very behind the eight ball here with this director/writer who wrote it and is obviously beloved and I talked to him the other day and I said 'I gotta see this movie so I could start a conversation with you that makes sense...'"
The James Gunn written and directed film is set to bring back the galactic characters in a sequel slated for May 5, 2017, and while that is two years away, Gunn confirmed via Twitter that a first draft of the script has been completed.
It has been quite a year for Russell, who appeared in "Furious 7" as Mr. Nobody, plays Sheriff Franklin Hunt in "Bone Tomahawk," and also appears as John "The Hangman" Ruth in Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight."
"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" opens on May 5, 2017.
