Playstation 5, Xbox 2 Release Date: PS5 Launch Announced by Sony but Xbox 2 Out First? New Features to Expect [Rumors]

Two years after Sony released the PlayStation 4, there's already a strong buzz about its follow-up. There is usually a seven-year waiting time between console releases, but it appears gamers will not have to wait long for the next generation PlayStation. An announcement could be in the line.

Tech Gadget Central reported that Sony is poised to announce the coming of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) sooner than expected. The news outlet also noted that Sony is already working on the console, but suggested that it could be taking its sweet time developing the PS5 so that it is the most powerful.

Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida did say back in April 2014 that there's a good reason for the company to already develop their next PlayStation, per Recode. "If they [developers] still feel that we need more machine power - 'We want to realize this and that and that, but we cannot do [it] with PS4," Yoshida said.

The target date puts the launch of the PS5 between 2018 and 2020, and gamers should expect that the new gadget will be thinner, lighter and sleeker than what's currently being enjoyed by avid players. There are speculations that the PS5 will no longer carry disc drives, which explains the console's new design. Games will be streamed and digitally downloaded instead of sold in physical discs, per Parent Herald.

The PS5 is also pegged to have the capacity to handle virtual reality technology and a powerful 4k resolution. It will also be carrying a faster AMD chipset, per Crossmap.

Meanwhile, as news about the PS5 is drawing more interests, Microsoft might just be the first to release its next generation console versus Sony. The two companies have long battled for dominance in the console wars, with gamers mostly benefiting from the releases and feature improvements.

The Xbox Two was already confirmed by Microsoft executive Phil Spencer in an interview with The Verge. "I fully expect that you'll see another console from us [...] Our best customers are Xbox console customers, and I want to keep those people engaged both on the Xbox One and anything we might do in the future," said Spencer. The confirmation puts them ahead of the console wars.

The Xbox Two is expected to also deliver new features like the 4k resolution that works nicely with smart televisions. This isn't available in the Xbox One, but the next generation console will reportedly be backward compatible, per N4BB.
