There is so much to look forward to in this May's "Captain America: Civil War" release—or should it be called "Age of Ultron 2"? The Russo brothers directed film brings back fan favorites Iron Man, Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Falcon, and introduces several more new characters for fans to obsess over. However, from what timeline does "Civil War" essentially pick up from? Joe Russo spilled the beans with Comic Book.
"We like to say that the amount of time that has passed in between films is the amount of time that has passed in the movies," Russo explained. "So, it's about that amount time."
"We find Cap leading the Avengers. He's tutoring or mentoring Scarlet Witch in the beginning of the movie and bringing her into the fold. We find them on a mission at the start of the film," the director said. Spoiler—Scarlet Witch may be Team Cap after actress Elizabeth Olsen said her character was the "wild card" of the group.
"She’s coming into her own and starting to understand and have conflict with how she wants to use her abilities..." Olsen told IGN in October. "I like that they didn’t release Scarlet Witch in the promo photos for the teams—it places her as being a wild card, and I like her having that kind of edge that people don’t know what she’s capable of."
Techno Buffalo reported that, as per Russo, "The effect that Ultron has had on everyone certainly is central to the storytelling of the movie. It's very strong."
"We're dealing with issues of collateral damage, imperialism, what rights do super heroes have to pursue villains across borders," the director added. "It's very politically minded. Cap's dealing with all of that at the beginning."
Similarly, actor Chris Evans recently told Cineplex that his titular character is undergoing an "evolution," wherein viewers can find "a guy who used to love the system not so sure about trusting it. And a guy like Tony Stark, who used to buck the system and dance to the beat of his own drum all of a sudden thinking, maybe we need some order."
Evans admitted that, despite the feud between the two Avengers, "There’s a great parallel that they draw between my character and Tony Stark."
Their differences only lie in what they believe is what's best for the safety of the world, given the events of "Age of Ultron", wherein Stark's very own Ultron program backfired and turned on the humans.
"It’s something we can all relate to in terms of how we perceive our own society and culture, in terms of what is best for people," Evans explained. "You can go right down to Democrat and Republican; everyone has a different opinion of what’s best."
"Captain America: Civil War" opens in theaters on May 6.
