CES 2016: Nikon Debuts New Action Camera [Price, Features & Photo]
- comments
This year's Consumer Electronics Show or commonly known as CES 2016 presentations by camera brands were underwhelming, but Nikon came in strong with the announcement of what could be a major competitor for the widely used GoPro.
Engadget reported that, during the CES 2016, Nikon officially announced the KeyMission 360, a camera with an ability to shoot 360-degree videos through an aspherical lens, providing users with a 4k resolution picture with integrated electronic image stabilization and a waterproof shell to top it off.
"The KeyMission 360 features an image sensor and lens combination on two opposite sides of the camera, and images from each are combined in-camera to create a single realistic, high-definition, 360° image," the report read. "The camera itself is waterproof to depths of 30 meters without a separate housing, and is also very tough, standing up well to dust, shocks and low temperatures. In addition, reliable electronic vibration reduction, enabled via applications during playback, reduces the effects of camera shake, producing sharp and crisp movie quality."
Nikon's announcement also comes with the promise that the KeyMission 360 is merely the "first of Nikon's range of action cameras," so users should expect more innovations from the brand in the coming years.
The Verge's Sean O'Keane wrote that, this year, action cameras and 360-degree videos will mostly come together, beginning with the KeyMission 360. Nikon may become a competitor for GoPro, which is taking its time releasing the next iteration of their massively successful action camera, probably because of the innovation they are pouring into it and because of the absence of major competitors in the field. If Nikon grows into a large competitor, though, GoPro still has the advantage of drones, for the meantime.
Speaking of GoPro, New York Post reported that the brand is seemingly confident amidst the news of Nikon's KeyMission 360. GoPro spokeswoman Kelly Baker said, "It’s behind glass, and who knows what [the picture] looks like. We definitely are aware of others trying to encroach on the space to give us a little kick in the rear. But you can’t let that scare you into putting out something that isn’t ready."
As per PC Mag, Nikon ambassador Corey Rich showed footage that he took using the camera, which can be viewed below. The Nikon KeyMission 360 is set to be released this spring. For more information on this exciting new camera and Nikon's other offerings, visit nikonusa.com.
