Bad news for the gaming world today as Marc Laidlaw announces his retirement from Valve, the company he has worked with for the last 18 years. Many fans remember him from his work with several video games including "Half Life" and "Half Life 2." It is going to be interesting how the next installment of the "Half Life" series will go without Laidlaw.
According to a report relayed by the Immortal, Eurogamer confirmed Laidlaw's retirement. "I had a good run," he said. "But lately I have been feeling a need for a break from the collaborative chaos of game production, and a return to more self-directed writing projects."
The news of Laidlaw's retirement broke when a Reddit user, TeddyWolf, posted a copy of a screenshot that clearly indicates a communication through email between him and the game writer. Many fans were hoping it was one those Internet-trolling situations that usually happen in Reddit, but Eurogamer verified the news.
Many fans got disappointed by the news; especially after the Laidlaw stated that the "Half Life" series is no longer in his control, as reported by the tech news outlet, Geek.
"Half-Life" is now in the hands of its game developer, Valve. Does it mean that the future release of "Half-Life 3" will be put on delayed again? Many fans are speculating that this could be the direction the game is heading to, especially that the people behind the series could not come up with a definite title for the upcoming installment.
Laidlaw said that Valve may already have a plan for "Half Life." However, he cited that he no longer have anything to do with it.
"Where Valve may choose to take it in the future is not in my hands," Laidlaw said. "Since I no longer speak for Valve, it would be inappropriate of me to answer questions or speculate openly on the fate of the franchise."
He acknowledged his work with the critically-acclaimed video game series and said that he can no longer speak in behalf of the developer. "I have been a grateful co-creator, but my time working on the series is behind me," Laidlaw added in a report relayed by Geek.
According to the Valve, Laidlaw was the lone game writer for both "Half Life" and "Half Life 2."
Laidlaw did not elaborate on his future plans after retirement but he did say that he will go back writing his own stories. It is something that he did not have any chance to do after nearly two decades in the gaming industry.
